X-ray diffraction (XRD)

This technique is a very fast and analytical method used to identify the phase of a crystalline material. Today, the above technique is one of the common methods for studying crystal structures and atomic distance.

Each material has its own XRD spectrum and scatters the emitted X-rays according to a specific pattern. As a result, this spectrum is like a fingerprint for each substance and it is not possible for the spectrum of two substances to be similar.

X-rays are mostly used to identify unknown crystalline materials (eg minerals and inorganic compounds). Determination of unknown solids is of great importance for geology, environment, materials science, engineering and biology studies. In addition, they use this spectrometry in the following cases:

  • Measuring the purity of a substance
  • Identification of fine-grained minerals such as clay and mixed particles
  • Determining the dimensions of the unit cell
  • Properties of crystalline materials
